The boldest moderns were called "fat face" and took the serif letterform to the extreme. With exaggerated high-contrast features and inflated ball terminals, fat face represented the most radical example of saturating a page with so much ink for maximum impact at the time. These exaggerated forms lend the style not only emphasis, but also a lively character, with flowery capitals and italics endowed with wonderful charm.
