Nothing is hidden in the simplistic forms and straightforward aesthetic of Anya Danilova’s Rezak typeface family. Rezak isn’t a typeface family that originated directly in the digital world; rather, it draws inspiration from the robust presence of cut-out letters made from tangible materials: paper, stone, and wood. With fewer cuts, the forms remain dark and simple. With more cuts, the forms become lighter and more defined, resulting in a dynamic typeface family that does not get stuck within a specific category.
The black and medium weights began as a single concept before branching out into screen and text categories. The four text weights were created through pendulum-like swings in the design direction, experimenting with contrast, angles, tangent redirects, and the number of allowed anomalies. The text weights are visible starting at 10 points and become subtle at smaller sizes. Last but not least is the highly technological Incised screen style, which employs a surprising range of trigonometric functions to make it behave exactly as intended. Its appearance can be distinctive and evocative or completely exaggerated.
Most standard typefaces vary only in weight; Rezak shifts in intent, highlighting the relationship between darkness and light, presence and absence—what is removed and what remains. Rezak’s Black and Incised screen styles are like a ray of light in reverse and are perfect for high-impact applications: websites, headlines and large text, games, attention-grabbers, posters, and packaging. The typeface works for all kinds of products, from youthful or artisanal to organic and natural. Try them in logos, complex prints, branding, and as a pattern for further experimentation.
The text styles are bold, energetic, and well-crafted, rounding out the family with four weights (regular, semi-cursive, bold, and extra-bold) and matching italics for a total of ten. These lively styles work well in children’s books, attention-grabbers, movie titles, and subtitles across a wide range of topics such as architecture, coffee, nature, cooking, and other more general uses.
Rezak’s crisp letters are designed to showcase rough, bold, or dramatic text. Another advantage is that this family isn’t limited to a specific genre or script, so it can be easily adapted to other scripts, such as modern Latin and extended Cyrillic, which supports forgotten languages like Abkhaz, Itelmen, and Koryak. Rezak’s drive toward creativity and innovation, with an eye toward the rich history of typography, reinforces our foundry’s mission to publish invigorating typefaces with the highest functionality and broadest applicability.
