"Abelina" is a typeface that can be used at screen sizes for headlines, based on the central premise of emulating certain characteristics of gestural writing. Concepts such as spontaneity, speed, and fluidity—associated with the use of specific calligraphic tools (in this case, the pointed brush)—led to a typographic result based on a pattern-like structure derived from chancery and italic calligraphic models. “Abelina”—originally designed by Yanina Arabena (calligrapher, graphic designer, and type designer)—has been reborn as “Abelina Pro” thanks to the solid work of Guillermo Vizzari in collaboration with Ale Paul of Sudtipos. Throughout its use, “Abelina Pro” maintains the structure of a bold style, integrating a dynamic rhythm into the composition of short texts and lending personality to each of the words it forms. It features over a thousand glyphs, including various alternates, ligatures, initials, and miscellaneous elements to reinforce the designer’s vision of merging a calligraphic project into the world of typography, thereby enabling new ways to express this vast universe of italic styles. The “Abelina” project began as a typographic project developed by Yanina Arabena—under the guidance of Ale Paul and Ana Sanfelippo—as part of her Specialization in Typographic Design at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, during 2011 and 2012.
