From the very beginning, “Esmeralda” was strongly influenced by the classic “capitalis monumentalis,” carved in stone. Similarly, the origin of this capital script lay in the brush—a form of writing created simply by hand. Therefore, these two worlds were intended to underlie the form of each letter, redefining them. And this combination of styles was also meant to be reflected in a set of lowercase letters that would broaden the range of possible uses. The foundational calligraphy provided a solid basis for the development of the lowercase glyphs, ensuring proper interaction with the uppercase letters. “Esmeralda” features a large number of ligatures that blend classical structures with a more contemporary feel. With over 1,100 glyphs, it offers a multitude of uses through a wide range of ligatures, alternate characters, initial caps, miscellaneous elements, and connectors—all accessible via OpenType. "Esmeralda" is perfect for conveying a classic yet fresh, modern, and slightly daring tone of voice. Designed by Guille Vizzari, in collaboration with Ale Paul’s hard work and remarkable contributions, "Esmeralda" stands out in a subtle and unexpected way—almost imperceptibly. Its delicate yet solid curves, serifs, and terminals give every composition a refined, elegant, and exquisite feel, combined with a firm and robust appearance. "Esmeralda" began as a typographic project developed by Guillermo Vizzari—under the guidance of Ale Paul and Ana Sanfelippo—as part of his Specialization in Typographic Design at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, during 2011 and 2012.
