Malambo is the result of a new collaboration between Angel Koziupa and Alejandro Paul, in which the spontaneous gestures of calligraphic strokes converge with a meticulous digitization process. The project is characterized by a deliberate exploration of controlled irregularity: slight shifts in the stroke and intentionally unstable modulations generate a dynamic visual texture that emphasizes movement and expressiveness.
From a formal standpoint, the typeface is distinguished by its rhythmic energy and playful character. Variations in the line, unconventional contrasts, and unexpected structural solutions produce a visual experience that suggests narrative and humor, while maintaining internal coherence within the typographic system. This tension between spontaneity and technical control constitutes one of the conceptual pillars of the design.
The name Malambo refers to the traditional Argentine dance of the same name, historically performed by gauchos, an emblematic figure of the country’s rural culture. The reference is not merely nominal: the typeface visually conveys the intensity, virtuosity, and rhythmic cadence characteristic of this choreographic expression, translating its performative qualities into the typographic realm.
Designed primarily for display use, Malambo stands out in applications where the typeface takes on a leading and expressive role. It is particularly well-suited for headlines, cultural pieces, and graphic projects that require dynamism and a distinctive personality. The quality of this typeface was recognized when it was selected as Best in Show Display Font at the Letras Latinas Biennial, cementing its relevance within the contemporary typographic landscape.
