The Poem Script typeface family is a sophisticated synthesis of late 19th-century calligraphy techniques, reviving the tradition of pen lettering in the United States. The system is based on the complex style historically known as the “Italian Alphabet,” an American variant of the British Italian Hand, which, in turn, has its roots in 17th-century French bâtarde scripts. Academically, Poem Script serves as a document of typographic archaeology, reviving a visual canon in which elegance and ornamental exuberance are not mere embellishments, but structural components of the system. Awarded by the Type Directors Club and Communication Arts, this typeface showcases masterful control of the stroke in a contemporary context.
