Amate is a typeface family designed for editorial text, especially for newspapers. It was developed in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico, and takes its name from the amate tree, traditional in the region and source of the handmade paper used by local communities. The family has a "news" version, with shorter ascenders and descenders, designed to optimize legibility on small bodies. It supports sixteen languages and combines functionality with an organic warmth inspired by craftsmanship.
