Soccer numbers represent a balancing act between style and functionality. Inspired by brush calligraphy, Puma commissioned the Gabriello font in its Bold version for the jerseys of sponsored teams during the 2010 African Cup of Nations. This same font was used for the African teams sponsored by the brand during the World Cup of the same year, including Algeria, Cameroon, Ghana and Ivory Coast. In contrast to typical straight-sided athletic lettering, Gabriello features a slant on two axes, both horizontally and vertically, which brings script-like energy without creating production issues on the jerseys.
