CHILEAN: “EL MERCURIO LIES,” read the banner hung by Pedro Cardyn on August 11, 1967, at the Main Building of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. The phrase aimed to expose the conservatism of the right wing, which in those years was trying to impose neoliberalism on the country.
Today, 54 years later, this statement rings true and remains as relevant as ever in the media. The lie and the imposition of a false normality were silent and everyday occurrences—an absurd and obvious lie that we no longer believe.
