Specimen Sánchez Niu
Note. Specimen of the typeface Sánchez Niu. Copyright by Latinotype.

Sánchez Niu is a redesign of Sánchez—one of the first typeface families from Latinotype, designed in 2011. In the type design industry, the terms “nova,” “neue,” “next,” and “new” are often used to refer to a typeface that has been modified in various ways: redesign, technical adjustments, an expanded character set, etc. At Latinotype, we’re starting to use the word “niu” to refer to these types of typefaces. “Niu” is an adaptation of the original word “new”—that is, we’ve adapted this English word to the phonology and orthography of our own language while retaining its original meaning. Cultural fusion, diversity, change, and adaptation are part of the essence of Latin American culture, and at Latinotype, we constantly express these elements in everything we do. Latin power! This new version includes improvements that make it work well with longer texts. However, these improvements have not significantly altered the font’s appearance. We have adjusted the original proportions and added a series of new characters, as well as OpenType features such as small caps, old-style figures, tabular numbers, and stylistic alternates. Sánchez Niu contains a character set of 720 characters compatible with 219 languages. The font is suitable for long texts, headlines, and logos, and has been optimized for web use. Sánchez Niu includes two free fonts: Regular and Regular Italic. Corrections, digital editing, and proofreading by César Araya, Rodrigo Fuenzalida, and Alfonso García.
