Lebecqué was born out of a revival project with a clear purpose: to delve into historical forms and transform them into something distinctly personal and contemporary. It began with a simple yet powerful question: How closely must a typeface resemble its origin to truly be considered a revival? And more importantly, can a Renaissance typeface exist in today’s world? The roman typeface is inspired by a fragment sent by Guillaume Le Bé II to Jan Moretus in 1599—a typeface cut by Jacques Sanlecque—while the cursive draws on the work of Robert Granjon. But Lebecqué is not a replica; it is an interpretation. This project explores the subtle details that define these originals and reimagines them through a modern lens. The result is a typeface that bridges the centuries, blending historical richness with a fresh, contemporary voice. Lebecqué invites us to rethink what “contemporary” truly means, demonstrating that the past is not something we leave behind, but something we continually reinterpret.
