This is the first part of Diderot, an extensive typographic family proud of its rationality and neoclassical lineage. It is inspired by the most important publishing work of the Enlightenment, the Encyclopédie, a majestic intellectual enterprise led by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert. It is not, however, a rescue of some 18th century typography, but a contemporary interpretation of the Enlightenment spirit. Like other representatives of its genre, it has a marked verticality, but it also differs from them in three fundamental aspects: 1) the lesser contrast between thick and thin strokes, which allows its use in text bodies; 2) the transitionless finials, closer to romanticism; and 3) the bold alternation of angles and curves, which infuses an unexpected vitality to the geometric frigidity that neoclassical and romantic fonts normally suffer from. Each of its 12 fonts features more than 1100 glyphs, including authentic small caps, several sets of numerals and diacritics for writing in a variety of languages that use the Latin alphabet, including Vietnamese. Like the Encyclopédie, the Diderot family will be completed in installments: the next step is a series for titles, in which the contrast will be much greater to accentuate its poise and elegance.
