Lagarto is based on the manuscript of Luis Lagarto, a Novo-Hispanic calligrapher from the 16th century. His lettering is incredibly imaginative and intricate, combining European and Mexican mannerist elements. The classical Latin proportions are mixed in Lagarto with loops, spirals and baroque scrolls that provoke a vivid, vertiginous, and, paradoxically, very legible reading. The roman, italic and versal/versalitas (small caps) versions correspond to the calligrapher's original manual styles and not to the typographer's inventions. Lagarto is part of the Compendio de Tipografías Mexicanas, an initiative of Gonzalo García Barcha, an enthusiastic Mexican typographer and publisher. In its original version it was commissioned for Blacamán Editores. Gonzalo also contributed the original manuscript from which the letterforms were inspired, as well as the initial idea and motivation for this elegant project. *(2001)
